The African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has officially concluded the third phase of its drawdown in a news report on Saturday, marking a key sign of Somalia’s progress towards national security self-reliance.
Since the start of the drawdown in 2023, AMISOM has successfully transferred control of 21 military bases to the Somali National Army and withdrawn 9,000 troops from the country, according to the New Somalia news website.
This reduction is part of AMISOM’s exit strategy, as it prepares to complete its mandate, which expires on 31 December 2024.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has gradually reduced its presence in the country, with the aim of enabling Somali security forces to assume full responsibility for maintaining peace and stability.
A new African Union operation in Somalia is expected to begin in January 2025 to succeed the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), with the aim of continuing to assist Somalia in strengthening its security capabilities.
The new African operation will focus on strategic support, training and partnership with Somali forces, reflecting the shift from direct military engagement to an advisory and supportive role.
