Somali Parliament Passes Law on Political Organizations and Parties with Overwhelming Majority

In a landmark decision today, members of both Houses of the Federal Republic of Somalia’s Parliament convened for a joint session at the People’s Assembly in Villa Hargeisa and approved the Law on Organizations and Political Parties.

The new legislation, which sets the framework for political organization and party formation in Somalia, received overwhelming support from the legislators. Out of the attendees, 177 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the law. Notably, there were no votes against it, and only one MP abstained by remaining silent.

According to some MPs this historic approval marks a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its political institutions and democratic processes.

The law is expected to regulate political parties and foster political pluralism, further advancing Somalia’s transition toward a stable and inclusive political system.

Government officials have praised the Parliament’s unity in passing the law, underscoring its importance for the country’s democratic development.
