Interpol Aids in Extradition of Somali Hospital Director Accused of Sex Crimes from Rwanda

Somali authorities, in cooperation with Interpol, have extradited Jama’ Abdi Mahamud, the former director of Qardho Hospital in Puntland’s Bari region, from Rwanda to face charges of rape and sexual abuse.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Office of the Attorney General said investigations linked Mahamud to multiple incidents of sexual assault, including the recording and online distribution of indecent videos involving women in Qardho.

Mahamud, who fled the country after the allegations emerged, was tracked down and arrested in Rwanda through a joint operation involving the Somali Police Force, the Attorney General’s Office, and Interpol. He was flown to Mogadishu on October 18, 2025, via Aden Adde International Airport, and handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning.

The federal government expressed gratitude to Rwandan authorities and Interpol for their cooperation in the arrest and extradition.

It remains unclear whether the case will be transferred to Puntland’s judicial institutions, where the alleged crimes occurred. Another suspect linked to the case is currently in custody in Garowe, awaiting further legal proceedings.
