KISMAYO, Somalia – On November 21, 2024, Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman was re-elected as the Speaker of the Jubaland Parliament for a third consecutive term. The parliamentary vote, held in Kismayo, saw Abdirahman secure 65 votes, defeating his sole contender, Ismail Keerow, who received 7 votes.
Abdirahman is known for his close relationship with President Ahmed Madobe, the incumbent leader of Jubaland. This re-election comes just days before the scheduled presidential election on November 25, 2024.
The upcoming presidential election is set against a backdrop of political tension between the Jubaland administration and Somalia’s Federal Government. International partners have urged both parties to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
As Jubaland prepares for its presidential election, the re-election of Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman as Speaker is seen as a significant implication that the current president is likely to win the next week’s election.
